Practical conversion examples

Product code 00123, notes containing commas and nested addresses need different checks. Our guide covers leading zeros, duplicate headers, UTF-8 text and array paths.

JSON & CSV guide: leading zeros, nested values and UTF-8 →

JSON → CSV

Convert an object or an array of objects into a table. Columns include keys from every row. Nested objects and arrays are JSON strings by default. Enable flattening to create columns such as address.city.

CSV → JSON

The first row contains column names. Quoted delimiters and multiline text are supported. Values remain strings to preserve leading zeros in codes and postal codes.

Files are not uploaded to a server. Input is limited to 5 MB. Format or minify JSON to adjust its whitespace.

Before you convert

How is nested JSON converted?

Objects and arrays are stored as JSON strings by default. Flattening converts nested objects to dot-separated columns; arrays remain strings. Without flattening, a profile object stays in the profile column. Converting CSV back to JSON does not automatically restore nested objects.

Are CSV numbers and dates converted automatically?

CSV to JSON keeps all values as strings to avoid changing 00123, long identifiers or dates. Duplicate or blank headers and rows with a different number of columns produce errors.

What if non-English text looks wrong in Excel?

Download CSV with UTF-8 BOM enabled. You may also need to use Excel’s data import and select UTF-8 with the correct delimiter.

What do formatting and minifying change?

Formatting uses two-space indentation; minifying removes unnecessary whitespace. JavaScript parsing and serialization rules apply, including key ordering and numeric precision. Enter very large integers as strings. For duplicate keys, JSON.parse keeps the last value.
